Authorities in Unity State on Monday confirmed that they have received 14 trucks loaded with 20,000 bags of sorghum and other non-food items to be distributed to the flood-displaced population in the state.

Authorities in Unity State on Monday confirmed that they have received 14 trucks loaded with 20,000 bags of sorghum and other non-food items to be distributed to the flood-displaced population in the state.

The 14 trucks loaded with food and non-food items arrived from Sudan over the weekend.

The state’s acting information minister David Gai Jiejor told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the distribution of the relief items procured by the state government will commence as soon as the other trucks on the way arrive.

“It is our role and responsibility to make sure that our people benefit from their own state government. I cannot tell you how much it cost the state to purchase these food items,” Minister Gai said. “The state has to make sure there is the availability of food and the community is food secure. We purchased these food items on our own without the involvement of the national government.”

He said the share of the SSP 10 million allocated by the national government to support the flood-affected communities across the country has not been disbursed to Unity State.

“We are waiting for the last convoy of trucks carrying food and non-food items from Sudan to arrive in order to begin the distribution process. Minister Gai said.

He urged the flood-affected communities in the state to be patient while waiting for the distribution of the relief items.
