The business community in Unity State Friday donated food items to the flood-displaced community in Rubkona County.
The chairperson of the state’s traders union, Michael Riek Malia, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that the donated food items include 40 bags of sugar, 10 bags of salt, 100 bags of maize flour and sorghum and cooking oil to be distributed to the affected people in Rubkona, Pakur, Nhial, Dingding, and other affected areas.
"We as the traders' Union in Unity State are standing behind our government and Governor Dr. Joseph Nguen Monytuil to rescue our most disadvantaged population and this is the reason we decided to donate food items to them,” Riek said.
The commissioner of Rubkona County, Gatluak Whicar, confirmed the donation by the traders union.
"Yes, I can confirm that the traders' union has donated food items which include food such as maize flour, sugar, salt, and sorghum. Our traders in Unity State have made very positive support and contribution to the flood victims of Rubkona County,” Commissioner Whicar said.
He said the floods are still advancing and have displaced communities who were staying in the islands of Dingding, Pakur, Ngop, and Nhial Diu.
The chairman of the Leek community in Rubkona County who also doubles as Unity State’s minister of physical infrastructure, Lam Tungwar Kueigong, said 23,000 people have so far been displaced by floods in Rubkona County.
"The total population displaced by flood currently from Rubkona county stands at 23,000 individuals. But the number of people coming is increasing every day,” Minister Tungwar said. "Those areas which were islands are currently occupied by floods, especially in the southern part of Rubkona County. Those living in the northern part of Rubkona County have migrated further to the North near Sudan and they are living in the bushes.”
He said South Sudan’s First Lady, Ayen Mayardit, has donated mosquito nets, plastic sheets, and fishing nets and that there were some pledges from the Jonglei State governor, and presidential security advisor, Tut Gatluak Manime.
