Unity State: 2 wounded, 270 cattle raided in Mayiendit County

Local authorities in Mayiendit County, Unity State, said armed youth suspected to be from the neighboring Leer County on Friday raided 270 head of cattle and injured 2 people in Mayiendit County.

Local authorities in Mayiendit County, Unity State, said armed youth suspected to be from the neighboring Leer County on Friday raided 270 head of cattle and injured 2 people in Mayiendit County. 

The commissioner of Mayiendit County, Dr. Gatluak Nyang, told Radio Tamazuj that two cattle owners were wounded and over 270 head of cattle raided in Mirnyal Payam of Nyang village in Mayiendit County.

“Mirnyal Payam of Mayiendit County is a bordering area of Leer County. So, the armed youth from Leer County came from Thoknyor in Leer and attacked Mirnyal and raided 270 cattle at 1 am on Friday,” he said. “Early in the morning, the cattle owners managed to run after their cattle and they recovered some few from the armed raiders.”

He added: “Our situation is currently stable and I have dispatched members of the organized security forces and the military to check the situation and it is calm and there is no other problem.”

Peter Chak Yoach, a parliamentarian representing Mayiendit County in the Unity State legislative assembly condemned the continuous attacks and cattle raiding in Mayiendit County.

“We have a report of an attack and cattle raiding in Mayiendit County in Mirnyal Payam where 370 cattle were taken by cattle raiders suspected to be from Leer County and they wounded nearly 5 people and burned down 17 houses in the villages,” he said.

The legislator urged the youth in Leer County to cease attacking and raiding cattle from Mayiendit County.
