Local authorities in South Sudan’s Unity state intend to relocate internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the UN protection of civilians’ site to an alternative place.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, the Unity State Minister of Information Peter Makuoth Malual said they asked the UN mission through the humanitarian coordinator Toby Lanzer to relocate the IDPs who sought protection at the UN protection of civilians’ site to a safer area.

He said the IDPs should be taken to higher ground due to flooding caused by rains fall in the current base.

The official expressed concern that this situation could pose high risks to citizens during this rainy season because the area where are now living is a low-lying land.

However, Makuoth said they have not received a positive response from the UN mission on the matter so far. He said they will keep communicating with UN officials on the relocation of the conflict-displaced citizens.

About 47,000 civilians are sheltering in the UN base in Bentiu for fear of ethnic or racial attacks from soldiers outside.
