Unity state authorities have praised the SPLA-IO for their recent move to open humanitarian corridors in the state.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Friday, Unity State Information Minister Peter Makuoth Malual said they welcomed the initiative, which will allow citizens living in remote areas to come to Bentiu town and get basic supplies in the market.
Malual said the road connecting Guit to Rubkona and Bentiu is now open.
“The movement is normal after the rebels accepted to allow the movement of citizens and the situation is calm,” he said.
He also said they have reports that the security situation in the surrounding counties is relatively stable. Both sides have been maintaining their positions for several days now.
“There are rebels in the southern counties in Unity state, but they’re in their positions,” he said.
He said this was an indication that both sides are committed to the cessation of hostilities agreement they signed recently.
The government will attempt to register any civilians who decide to return to their homes, he said, so that they can receive humanitarian assistance.
