The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has said it is investigating an incident at one of its camps on 23 June 2024 which resulted in the death of a 16-year-old male and the injury of another.
According to a UNISFA press statement on Tuesday, in the early hours of Sunday (23 June), an alleged intrusion attempt occurred at one of the UNISFA camps in Abyei.
“Despite repeated warnings, the intruders attacked peacekeepers, escalating the situation, and necessitating the use of force,” the statement read in part. “UNISFA personnel swiftly provided medical assistance and transported the individuals to the Level-II hospital to ensure they received immediate and appropriate care. Unfortunately, one of them succumbed to injuries on the way.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families affected and reaffirm our commitment to transparency as we investigate this matter,” it added.
UNISFA said it is also engaging with the Juba-appointed administration and community leadership on the matter.
“UNISFA remains dedicated to its mission of maintaining peace and security in Abyei and ensuring the well-being of its residents,” the statement concluded.
Earlier in the week, Abyei Special Administrative Area Information Minister Bolish Koch put out a press statement demanding an investigation into the shooting and killing of the minor, Chol Lual Deng Ajak, by UNISFA personnel at one of the Force’s facilities in Abyei.
The deceased and three others are said to have illegally and forcefully breached the security perimeter of the UN facility on Sunday. The peacekeepers tried to stop them in vain and opened fire leading to the death of one and injury of another.
