The Duk County authority confirmed that one of their sub-chiefs has been shot dead on Monday at Poktap area, Duk County, in Jonglei State.

Micheal Wuor Reeth, Duk County Commissioner told Radio Tamazuj over the phone on Thursday that one of his county sub-chiefs,  Jok Ruop was killed in near Poktap around 7pm. The area of the incident is a 10 minute-drive away from Poktap.

“Yes, it was true, it happened on Monday when the cows were just returning to Luak, where they are kept. After the Chief saw one of his cows was missing, he decided to go and look after the lost cow. While crossing a short distance, he fell into ambush and he was shot dead immediately,” Wuor said.

After youths and other relatives in the neighborhood heard the gunshot, they found that the sultan was shot dead. The commissioner stated that the gunmen who killed the sub-chief were then chased by the youths and others security agencies in the area but they have failed to find them.

He noted that the gunmen allegedly are youths from Lou Nuer, who have been suspected of having some plans to block road network communications within Duk areas and between Duk and Twic East Counties since the start of 2015.

Many people from Greater Bor counties pointed to Murle tribes that were well-known for the abduction of children and cattle raiding in their villages, including Duk County, but the current incident proved them to be innocent.

The Commissioner was asked whether they suspect the Murle tribe to have been behind the incident. Wuor said: “We are not suspecting Murle tribes for such insecurity in the area, because last month they had evidence that shows the attackers were Nuer youths from Uror County.”

He revealed that the same incident happened on 14 July when they shot dead three people between Ayueldit and Poktap. One person was killed and another was wounded. On 19 July, they killed a police officer in the area between Ayueldit and Poktap.

Commissioner Reeth said the situation now has returned to normal, and that the usual transport has resumed between Panyagoor and Poktap, because youths and security agencies have improved the security in the area.
