UNDP says it will support South Sudan unity government

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says that it plans to support South Sudan's government and to fund efforts for “recovery and reconstruction... to complement humanitarian assistance.”

UNDP Associate Administrator Tegegnework Gettu landed in Juba today and met with leaders of the Transitional Government of National Unity (TgoNU).

The UN agency said that “His visit coincides with the successful formation of the TGoNU on 29 April following the signing of a peace agreement in August 2015.”

“I would like to commend the government of South Sudan for their commitment to the Peace Agreement,” said Gettu on arrival.

“UNDP, in close cooperation with other agencies, will continue to support the Transitional Government of National Unity to effectively implement the Peace Agreement and lay the foundation for a peaceful transition to democratic governance, sustainable development, and inclusive growth.”

Vice President James Wani and Finance Minister David Deng were among the officials who met with Gettu.

In a press release, UNDP said that it would be working to improve “areas of police, justice and corrections” in South Sudan.
