Uncertainty about political and security committee meetings on Abyei

The fate of the Joint Political and Security Committee meetings (JPSC) between South Sudan and Sudan is uncertain. A meeting which was scheduled for this week did not occur. Neither will an Abyei Joint Oversight Committee (AJOC) meeting which was scheduled for 6 June.

The misunderstanding arose after the recent re-capture of Abu Karshola by SAF forces, as the Sudan government accused the Juba government of logistically supporting Sudan’s rebels.

Major General Abdul-Rahman Siral-Khatim, Sudan’s ambassador to Addis Ababa, as well as its envoy to the AU emphasised in a press statement yesterday that no meetings have been scheduled with the AU or the AU high-level panel.

There has been no further confirmation, of either the 3 June JPSC committee meeting in Juba, or the 6 June AJOC committee meeting in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia.
