UN worker shot dead on main Kordofan road

The UN World Food Programme employee Jamal Al Fadil Farag Allah was killed today in an ambush on the road between the capitals of South Kordofan and North Kordofan.

"Our driver was killed yesterday in an armed attack in an area some 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Kadugli," WFP spokeswoman Amor Almagro told the news agency AFP.

Jamal Al Fadil Farag Allah, the victim, was married with five children.

"He was driving fellow staff member Saad Yousif when their vehicle was attacked by two unknown assailants," Almagro said, adding that the driver was also wounded and later airlifted to Khartoum for treatment.

They were on a main road in a marked UN vehicle on official business, she added.

In a separate incident on Thursday, the WFP compound in Kutum in North Darfur was looted by pro-government militia, who stole furniture, fuel, and computers from an office and guest house there. The compound of GOAL, an Irish aid organization, was also looted.
