The UN Security Council on Wednesday adopted resolution 2340, extending until 12 March 2018 the mandate of the Panel of Experts that monitors sanctions imposed on Sudan.

The 15-member council underscored the need for it to have full access to the Darfur region and insisted that the government of Sudan remove all restrictions imposed on its work.

Unanimously adopting resolution 2340 (2017) under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, the council stressed that it would monitor the degree of cooperation by the government on such matters.

It also expressed concern that the Panel had not been able to access Darfur since the adoption of resolution 2265 (2016), and insisted that the government issue timely multi-entry visas to all its members for the duration of their mandate, and waive the requirement for Darfur travel permits.

For his part, Permanent Representative of Sudan to the United Nations , Dr. Mustafa Osman Ismail, urged the council  to suspend all sanctions imposed on Sudan and adopt  a new resolution for UNAMID to leave Darfur.
