UN Security Council delegation acquaints itself with condition of displaced citizens in Wau

A delegation of visiting members of the UN Security Council on Sunday morning met with representatives of internally displaced persons at the UN camp in Wau town in South Sudan’s Western Bahr al Ghazal State.

Samantha Power, US Ambassador to the United Nations said in a statement that the UN delegation's visit aims to improve civilian’s protection.

Power lamented acts of violations committed against the conflict-displaced people who fled to the camp during fighting between government forces and armed groups in Wau. The US diplomat promised to discuss with President Kiir all acts of human rights violations committed against innocent civilians in Wau.

Meanwhile, displaced people who are currently sheltering inside the Catholic Church in Wau presented a petition to the visiting delegation of the UN Security Council. The conflict-affected people called for implementation of the peace agreement in order to restore security and stability in Wau town.

A representative of displaced women said the visit by the UN delegation restored hope for peace and stability in the area. However, the displaced mother said the international community’s intervention was late.

The displaced families expressed their concerns about disruption of children's schooling due to conflict in the area, while calling on the international community and the government to improve the security situation so they could return to their houses.

For his part, Stephen Robo, coordinator of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) in Wau, said the visit by the UN Security Council was fruitful for peace implementation in South Sudan.
