UN Secretary-General Guterres meets Kiir, calls for swift implementation of agreement

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, on Monday, met President Salva Kiir in New York and called for the swift implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, on Monday, met President Salva Kiir in New York and called for the swift implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

According to a statement by the UN spokesperson, Guterres also urged Kiir to ensure the expeditious implementation of the 2022 Roadmap and reiterated the importance of conducting credible elections in South Sudan in December 2024.

“The Secretary-General and the President also discussed the country’s progress in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals,” the statement said. “The Secretary-General commended South Sudan’s efforts to resolve the conflict in the Sudan.”

“The Secretary-General and the President discussed the impact of the conflict in Sudan on South Sudan, the sustainability of humanitarian assistance, and the coordinated regional and international endeavors to end the conflict,” the statement concluded.
