As the United Nations (UN) commemorated its 77th anniversary, the field office in Western Equatoria State said the UN will continue to support durable peace in the region.
The UN was established in 1945 to rebuild hope and resilience after the devastation caused by World War II.
While reading a message from the United Nation’s Secretary General and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in South Sudan, the head of the field office Mr. Christopher Murange said: “I am especially honored by your attendance and participation in this ceremony of the UN family here in Yambio working across Western Equatoria State. I would like to assure you of our commitment to working with the government and the people of Western Equatoria State in achieving your aspirations and especially a durable and inclusive peace.”
Meanwhile, the Governor of Western Equatoria State Alfred Futuyo appreciated the UN family for its support in the peace process and in building the resilience of South Sudanese communities.
Futuyo further urged the humanitarian community to purchase locally-produced foodstuffs to build local economies rather than import from outside.
He said Western Equatoria State has had a successful harvest season and can sell to aid organizations.
“This year, we need to see that World Vision, FAO, and others, buy products from Yambio and let the money for buying aid food be paid here. You must find out from us if you can get the quantity of food you want here in Yambio or not before you go to buy outside the country,” Futuyo said. “If you go and buy from somewhere and want to bring it here, we will not allow it to enter the state because we have enough food production here this year.”
Governor Futuyo also promised to launch an agricultural show where farmers will showcase their local produce across the state next month.
UN Day is marked annually on 24 October. South Sudan became a member of the UN 11 years ago after winning its hard-fought independence.
