Two civilian contractors were shot by a United Nations peacekeeper and died as a result of their injuries in South Sudan, the UN mission said.

The identity of the attacker was not immediately clear.

In a Monday statement, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said that the incident occurred at its base in the capital Juba on Saturday, without disclosing the identity of the two victims.

The East African nation’s UN mission further said it was taking steps to establish the facts of the incident that occurred at Durupi along the Juba-Yei road.

It added that it has convened a review team comprised of representatives from UNMISS force, police and security services.

The mission has promptly informed the South Sudan Police Service of the incident, according to the statement.

“UNMISS deeply regrets the loss of life and is providing support to the families of the two men who died,” the mission said.
