The UN Humanitarian Coordinator for South Sudan, Eugene Owusu, said killing and harassment of aid workers must stop in the country.

Speaking during a weekly news conference in Juba on Wednesday, Owusu said attacks on humanitarian workers are unacceptable and they must stop in order to alleviate the suffering of people in South Sudan.

He pointed out that at least 82 aid workers lost their lives in the line of duty since the outbreak of conflict in South Sudan, while urging the warring parties to allow humanitarian access to the conflict-affected areas.

The UN official emphasized the importance of the Regional Protection Force (RPF) in South Sudan to protect civilians and support the current capacity of UNMISS in the country.

Last week, the World Food Programme (WFP) said three workers contracted as porters by its office in Wau town were killed during the recent violence in Wau town.
