UN finishes extraction of SPLM-IO supporters from DRC

The United Nations has finished extracting armed elements and civilians affiliated with the SPLM-IO from the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a UN official said on Thursday. 

Stephane Dujarric, a Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon said that the UN extracted 752 people from DRC including Riek Machar and his wife for humanitarian reasons. Machar is now believed to be in Sudan.

“The operations were conducted at the request of the Government of the DRC,” said Dujarric. “Operations were conducted on humanitarian grounds and within the role of contributing to stability in the DRC,”
