Inter-communal clashes in cattle camps last week in Lakes State resulted in about 100 deaths, according to the UN humanitarian office in South Sudan’s capital Juba.

Citing information received from authorities and partner organizations, the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said today that about 100 people were killed and 36 others wounded in “heavy inter-communal violence in six cattle camps in Rumbek Centre and Rumbek East counties.”

“More than 1,400 cattle were reportedly looted and never recovered. Tension remained high in the area. State authorities were strengthening security to prevent an escalation of the clashes in other areas,” reads the UN humanitarian report.

The UN report covers the period of 13-19 March. Earlier estimates of the death toll had reached as high as about 70 or 80.
