The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, arrived in Port Sudan Thursday to meet with the Transitional Sovereignty Council.
A press release from the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said Mohammed is accompanied by senior officials and the UN country team, including the Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami,
The aim of the visit, the statement said, is to focus on strengthening humanitarian efforts in Sudan.
The Deputy Secretary-General and her delegation will later visit Adré, Chad, to draw attention to the multifaceted challenges affecting the country, including the regional dimensions and key risks, and to appeal for global solidarity. Sudan has, since April 2023, been entrapped in a war pitting the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The war that has claimed thousands of lives has occasioned an immense humanitarian. Thousands of the displaced have crossed over to the neighboring Chad, piling pressure on the impoverished country.
