A high-level delegation of the United Nations (UN) led by the deputy special representative of the UN Secretary-General Sara Beysolow Nyanti on Tuesday visited Eastern Equatoria state capital Torit to assess the humanitarian situation.

A high-level delegation of the United Nations (UN) led by the deputy special representative of the UN Secretary-General Sara Beysolow Nyanti on Tuesday visited Eastern Equatoria state capital Torit to assess the humanitarian situation.

Ms. Nyanti, also the Humanitarian Coordinator, said the visit which is her first visit to the state, was to focus on the humanitarian situation, development, and peace efforts.

“We have come to look at Torit and we have come with an open mind to understand what you are doing around laying the foundation for development and what can be done in relation to humanitarian action required in the state, peacebuilding efforts, and how all those come together,” Ms. Nyanti said. I did not come to promise you money, I came with a mind and intent for us to bring all our expertise together to look at what is required to take the state forward and in a partnership where there are gaps, possibilities for mobilizing resources, then resources can follow.”

Samuel Gbaydee Doe, the UNDP country representative said the visit would also entail understanding the state strategic plan for development and any progress made.

“We want to be able to work with you with the support from the African Development Bank, UNDP, and many heads of mission here to join you to develop the state development plan which you have for the priorities for your state. It is to hear from you what are the top development plans for the state, how can the UN body combine with our collective efforts along with supporting partners in supporting you in implementation that development strategy,” he said. “The second reason is to see how you have managed the state, what efforts are put into the development of the state.”

Eastern Equatoria State governor Louis Lobong Lojore while addressing the visiting delegation said despite challenges, the state government is ready to support the developmental activities in collaboration with partners.

He commended the good working relations between the government and development partners in the state.

“I would also want to say due to last year’s flooding and irregular rainfall, harvest was very poor resulting in food insecurity in the state. I would like also to say that as you people know some people from Eastern Equatoria due to conflict that erupted in the country went for refuge in the neighboring country and as of now, the people are coming voluntarily, our people are coming back to their home states and they need assistance,” he said.

Lobong further explained that the recent influx of cattle from Jonglei state created insecurity that claimed over 18 lives but he added that the situation has returned to normal.

Ms. Nyanti, also the Humanitarian Coordinator was accompanied by the diplomatic corps and some heads of UN agencies in the country.
