The United Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) contingent of Bangladesh peacekeepers (BANBATT 6) on Tuesday handed over a variety of scholastic materials to Awiel Jadeed Primary School in Wau town in Western Bahr el Ghazal State.

The items consisted of textbooks for the South Sudan curriculum printed in Bangladesh, pens, and pencils among others.

The peacekeepers also handed over a children’s park within the school compound which is supported by the United Nations, holds significant importance and has far-reaching implications for the well-being of the children and the broader community. The children’s park in the school playground provides a vital space for children to engage in physical activity and play.

The park consists of a slipper, see-saw, swings, zebra, and mini goal bar and it was handed over to the school authorities on 13 February 2024.

The handover ceremony was attended by Brigadier General Abdullah Al Mamun, the commander of the Bangladesh contingent in the country, contingent commander BANBATT-6, ColonelMohammad Shafquat-Ul-Islam, Deputy Director (Education) Wau Municipality, Edward Joseph, and teachers of the school.

Speaking during the event, the school headmaster, Lodabik Joseph Ulak, appreciated the efforts of the peacekeepers in providing the school with the materials.

“Today we have received materials including sports kits for children and these materials are very important because such kits ensure that children attend school daily,” he said.

“We thank and appreciate the Bangladesh army for supporting our school and we hope they will continue supporting us.”

For his part, Brig. Gen. Abdullah Al Mamun, the BANBATT 6 Sector Commander, said the Bangladesh contingent and UNMISS will continue to support peace and other necessary needs to the people of South Sudan.

“South Sudan will be a very peaceful and beautiful country,” he stated.  We wish that you render all support to Bangladeshi peacekeepers as well as UNMISS so that they render their support to the people of South Sudanese, especially the children.”
