Umma Party official arrested in Buram after speaking to Radio Dabanga

Security authorities in Buram Locality have arrested the state secretary of the National Umma Party in South Darfur, Amar Jibril Hamid Ambodi. He was detained on Friday in the aftermath of a prison break in the town.

The party head in Buram Locality attributed the reason for the arrest to statements Amar Jibril made to Radio Dabanga last week about the recent prison break in Buram. The town was overrun last Tuesday night by gunmen mounted on horseback and camels who freed dozens of inmates after a firefight at the Buram police station.

The politician who was in the town at the time of the events announced the following day what he had witnessed. His statements were carried by Radio Dabanga, an independent radio station broadcasting to Darfur, affiliated to Radio Tamazuj.

Khamis Hamid Al Tajani, the head of the party in Buram locality said that Amar Jibreel was arrested on Friday and has not been released up to now. He noted that he met with the Buram locality commissioner and the head of security in the area and was allowed to visit the detained Jibril. The detained politician is in a good health but does not know when he will be released.

He called the incident a kind of political intimidation. He also criticized the authorities for failing to track the attackers and recapture the prisoners.
