Sarah Nogud-Allah, Secretary General of Sudan’s opposition National Umma Party (NUP), said they reject any attempts by the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) to dissolve the party.
In a complaint to Political Parties Council, NISS had said that NUP leader al-Sadig al-Mahdi violated the Interim Constitution and Political Parties Act 2007 when he signed the Paris Declaration with rebel groups fighting the Khartoum government.
The NISS then asked the Sudan Political Parties Council to give the Umma party one week to respond or be dissolved.
In a press statement, Sarah said the NUP has already received a notification from the Council about the complaint but said the move was “unconstitutional.”
Nogud-Allah said they will use legal pressure to reject the complaint, noting that their legal advisers have already submitted a petition demanding the Council give them more time instead of one week.
She added that the NUP will boycott the April 2015 presidential elections because the process would not be fair as long as there are no political freedoms.
