The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), a non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering around the globe, has begun its distribution of vegetable seeds and farming tools to vulnerable families in Yei River County.

Dara Elisa, the UMCOR program coordinator, told Radio Tamazuj today that they have distributed hoes and vegetable seeds to internally displaced persons and local residents in order to produce more food in the area.

The program coordinator pointed out that the project is being implemented in collaboration with Plan international, ICRC and Terres Des Hommes-TDH.

“As we speak now, we have given 2,000 houses through TDH, 1,000 hoes through Plan International and 6,000 hoes through ICRC, so in total we are going to give 14,000 hoes to all the registered IDPs. In addition to that, we shall give them varieties of vegetable kids to support their level of production,” she said.

Peter Malish, a local farmer in Yei area, expressed his happiness about the distribution of hoes to farmers. “I am happy although people say Yei is insecure because of war, I cannot wait to face food insecurity,” he said.

“I want to use the available piece of land near me to produce something for my own local family consumption. Thanks to UMCOR for supporting us,” he added.
