An umbrella of South Sudan’s opposition political parties led by leader of the People’s Liberal Party (PLP), Peter Mayen Majongdit said they welcome the commitment of President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar to hold face-to-face talks.
The Umbrella called upon both leaders to reaffirm their commitment to continue with constructive dialogue and to put the interest of the people of South Sudan ahead of their own interests.
“The protection of civilians and humanitarian access to all people in need is of the utmost importance. The people of South Sudan have been suffering for too long,” the group said in a statement extended to Radio Tamazuj.
The umbrella pointed out that the people of South Sudan desperately need reconciliation and that the upcoming face-to-face talks are welcomed as a sign of hope.
“No agenda has been set so far, and consequently, the people are urged to take it as a symbolic sign for future reconciliation,” it said.
The umbrella commended the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and other international partners for their continued efforts and support to bring lasting peace to the people of South Sudan.
