Uganda’s Museveni meets U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, reiterates willingness to mediate peace

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda on Monday met with the U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, at State House, Entebbe, and discussed the ongoing war in Sudan and strategies to support peace efforts there.

The envoy was joined by the U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, William W. Popp, and Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Adonia Ayebare.

The meeting comes amid continuing fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which erupted on 15 April 2023 and created one of the region’s worst humanitarian crises, displacing over 5 million people and leaving millions more in critical need of aid.

President Museveni highlighted the importance of dialogue and reconciliation, emphasizing Uganda’s support for African-led solutions that align with the African Union’s Peace and Security Council communique on Sudan and recent UN calls for a ceasefire.

For his part, Perriello thanked Museveni for his role in regional peace efforts and his wisdom in guiding the peace process, especially as the international community works to address the crisis.

“We came to seek your wise counsel and guidance on this matter,” he said, recognizing Uganda’s experience in supporting peace and stability in the region.

President Museveni recently said he was ready to mediate peace in the ongoing conflict in Sudan “should both parties be open to his involvement.”

“I am ready to mediate the conflict if they are agreeable,” Museveni said.

He urged the belligerents to ceasefire and hand over power to the people of Sudan.
