A heavy downpour on Monday left a Ugandan national dead in Northeast Maban County in South Sudan’s Northern Upper Nile State.

Local authorities said the man, identified as Solomon Karanga, was swept away by flood waters as she walked after the rain had stopped.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Northeast Maban County Commissioner Seman Al-Nur confirmed the incident, saying the Ugandan man was swept away by flood waters.

“Flood waters have affected the whole county and many families have moved to schools and hospitals. Schools have also been suspended due to floods," Al-Nur said.

The local official further said some aid agencies had suspended operations due to heavy rains and floods.

For his part, the governor of Northern Upper Nile, Thon Beny Thon said floods have devastated some counties in the state, with many people forced to leave their homes.

Governor Thon appealed to aid agencies to support the needy people.
