The Ugandan People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) will not be part of the regional protection force to be deployed in South Sudan, a senior Ugandan official said.
Gen. Katumba Wamala, Uganda’s Chief of Defense Forces told the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Internal Affairs on Thursday that Uganda and Sudan will not contribute any troops to South Sudan.
Katumba pointed out that the two countries have decided to decline from the deployment of the regional forces that was approved by the IGAD summit in Addis Ababa last week.
However, Katumba added that both Uganda and Sudan are ready to be available in case called upon and the regional force is free to use facilities like airports in the two countries.
