The American Corner at the University of Juba marks its 10-year anniversary this month.
During a commemorative event at the American Corner on Tuesday, the U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan, Michael J. Adler, said the facility has been a landmark of U.S. presence in South Sudan.
“The American Corner has been an important part of the U.S. presence in South Sudan since its opening 10 years ago this month,” he said. “It is an example of the U.S. effort to support and build strong ties between our people and the South Sudanese people.”
“This effort began well before the independence of South Sudan,” Amb. Adler added.
Since it opened on July 12, 2013, the American Corner has provided services and information to students and members of the public for more than a decade. There are more than 140 American Corners worldwide but the University of Juba hosts the only American Corner in South Sudan.
Although students are among the most frequent visitors, the American Corner is open for free to all members of the public.
“Besides offering printed and online resources and diverse programming, the American Corner also offers free internet access,” a U.S. Embassy press statement said.
As part of the 25 July commemoration, American officials and University leaders spoke, in addition to several young patrons.
Earlier in July, the University conducted a USA Quiz, and prizes for the top three winners were awarded.
