Representatives of the central banks of both Sudan and South Sudan are expected to hold a meeting in Juba in mid-February, according to Sudan’s central bank.
Officials from the Central Bank of Sudan announced that the joint meeting aims to reactivate mechanisms of the 2012 Cooperation Agreement and regulate trade as well as simplifying banking procedures between the two Sudans.
The upcoming meetings will also discuss reactivating banking points at border crossings between the two countries in order to facilitate movement of goods, according to the bank.
Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir recently ordered the opening of his country’s border with South Sudan for the first time since South Sudan’s secession in 2011.
South Sudanese President Salva Kiir had unilaterally announced a normalisation of relations, also ordering troops to pull back farther from the border.
Both countries had previously accused the other of backing armed rebellions against each other’s governments.
