At least two SPLA soldiers have been killed and three others wounded in an attack by a tribal militia in Malakal town in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State on Tuesday morning.
Eyewitnesses told Radio Tamazuj that an armed group of Dinka Akoka tribe attacked an SPLA patrol unit at Hai Jalaba.
The incident resulted in the killing of two soldiers on the spot and wounding of three others. The SPLA patrol was unable to pursue the perpetrators.
The attack reportedly stirred up fear among local citizens, forcing dozens of families to seek shelter in the UN base in Malakal.
There is rising tension between Dinka Akoka and Shilluk tribes along the Fashoda-Akoka border after the killing of Shilluk senior army officer recently caused insecurity in Malakal town.
Most families from Dinka and Shilluk ethnicities sought shelter in the UN base in fear of reprisal. Meanwhile, the government formed an investigation committee into the clashes.
