Two security men shot dead in Juba

A gunman in Juba shot dead two security personnel in Juba yesterday afternoon. There are conflicting accounts as to the identity of the perpetrator and whether he has been killed or remains at large.

One victim died immediately while the other was fatally wounded, and the perpetrator was killed in the shooutout, according to Central Equatoria State Police Commissioner Henry Danima. The soldier, identified as a sergeant in the SPLA engineering unit, opened fire at 2:00 yesterday afternoon, he said.

“The situation is that one [SPLA] sargent armed with AK-47 was walking on the road and for a reason which is not clear for us now yet, he shot two people one 2nd Lieutentant and one Sergeant from the National Security on the high road before he died.”

He explained, “One of the two victims had a pistol also shot at the assailant and was found by the police still alive he was wounded and taken to the hospital but he died later. We are taking measure and follow up that no revenge shooting takes place.”

A source within the hospital who lost a relative reported to Radio Tamazuj that the soldiers who were shot from the presidential forces named "Tiger" while other media reported the victims were National Security or Presidential Security Unity.

Presidential Press Secretary Ateny Wek denied that the victims were from Tiger Division. “Tiger forces are not part of that incident,” he said.

There are conflicting accounts of the location of the incident, with some saying it place in Hai Gem, others near Mobil roundabout and an official source saying Nimra Talata. A police source said that it took place in Hai Maya on Kokora Road.
