Two people killed near UNMISS PoC in Unity State

Two men are reported to have been killed near the protection site at the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) base in Unity State’s capital Bentiu.

Joe Contreras, a member of the UNMISS Public Information Office, confirmed to Radio Tamazuj that two dead bodies were found outside the UNMISS PoC earlier this week.

He declined to say how the men had died, but noted that the matter is being investigated.

John Malok, the state security advisor, alleged that the two men were killed at the gate of UNMISS camp when they were trying to enter the PoC.

He questioned whether UNMISS was working against the government, given that killers were being allowed to remain inside the PoC.

In remarks that have not been broadcast on Radio Tamazuj, Malok claimed he was told by his ‘intelligence’ inside the UNMISS camp that the two men were knifed by people loyal to the rebels, inside the UN-protected camp, where government troops and law enforcement have no access.

These claims of ‘rebel’ presence inside the civilian camp echo allegations made by the Government Spokesperson Michael Makuei Lueth about the PoC site in Bor, shortly after pro-government gunmen carried out a massacre there in April.

Radio Tamazuj is informed that shortly after the killing earlier this week, government troops arrived at the UN-protected camp site and took up firing positions within view of the civilians there.

They left only after a standoff of several hours with UN peacekeepers.
