Two people killed at funeral in Western Lakes

An unknown gunman killed two people in a revenge attack that occurred during a funeral in Western Bahr Naam County of Western Lakes State, police said.

The incident occurred at Akorkhor village on Tuesday last week.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, the state police spokesperson, Capt. Elijah Mabor Makuac confirmed the incident. He said two people were killed after a gunman opened fire on mourners, who were attending a funeral at Akorkhor village.

“The incident that left two relatives dead occurred when an unknown gunman came and opened gunfire on mourners,” he said.

The police officer further said security forces deployed to the area are still searching for the suspect to ensure that he faces justice.

Separately, Mabor said security forces shot and killed one cattle raider identified to be from Gok State in Abeer village on Thursday night.

“In Abeer village, there were some raiders who came to the area in an attempt to raid cows. The incident resulted in the killing of one person,” he said.

Cattle raids have claimed several lives since South Sudan’s independence in 2011. Cattle are a significant source of food and wealth for many communities.
