A branch manager of the local ‘Crocodile’ currency exchange and money transfer service in Cueibet County and one of his motorcycle drivers were killed on their way to Tonj South County, according to County Information Officer Mathew Chol Madhel.
The victim Ater Maker was a teacher who was recruited to work for the money service only recently, in August this year, according to one of his colleagues. Ater was on his way from Cueibet to Tonj South because he had run out of local currency when he was killed.
Rumbek East County Crocodile branch office manager Samuel Kuol Mathubier described the death of his workmate as a great loss to Crocodile in Lakes State and to South Sudan in general.
For his part, the county information officer said that the killing of the two travelers came in the context of recent killings in the same area by cattle guards from Cueibet and Tonj South.
Last week, authorities of two states conducted an inter-state peace initiative meant to bring peace and harmony between the bordering counties and to settle cases of revenge killing and cattle raiding against each other. It was agreed in the conference that there will be special court tasked to try crimes committed in the border areas.
The conference which was organized by PACT Sudan. Another conference is scheduled for January 2016 in Tonj South.
