At least two men died after they drowned in floodwaters in South Sudan’s Northern Liech State on Wednesday, a government official said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, the state security advisor, Gordon Malou Chiling said Riek Mar and Maliah Puok were swept away by floodwaters in Bul South County.
He expressed fears over the worsening humanitarian situation in the county, saying families have moved to higher ground to look for shelter.
Chiling appealed to humanitarian organizations to urgently intervene by providing support in form of mosquito nets, medicines and food for citizens in the flood-affected area.
According to United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), more than 908,000 people have been affected by heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding, of whom 620,000 people need immediate humanitarian assistance.
Last month, President Salva Kiir declared a state of emergency in the flood-affected areas.
