A tragic accident has left two people dead, one person missing and three others in critical condition after a boat carrying 15 security personnel capsized in the Pibor River on Sunday.

The boat was en route to Likuangule from Pibor as part of a peace mission organized by local authorities and various partners.

Greater Pibor Administrative Area Information Minister Oleyo Akuer told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the boat was carrying essential equipment and six firearms, all of which were lost in the river.

“It happened yesterday (Sunday) when some security forces were traveling to Likuangule along the Pibor River,” he said. “The driver (coxswain) of the boat was stung by a bee and he lost control and the boat capsized. Three people went missing but today two among them have been found dead.”

According to Minister Akuer, emergency response teams have been actively searching for the missing individuals of which two have been confirmed dead since the incident.

He said among the survivors, three had been transported to a nearby hospital due to the severe injuries they sustained.

The official stated that the authorities are carrying out a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading up to the accident and are working diligently to locate the missing personnel.
