Two people were killed and three others were injured when two boats collided on River Nile on Thursday night, authorities in Yirol East County of Lakes State confirmed.
The authorities said the boats carrying goods and passengers collided at Pan-Jai and Pan-lual area.
Yirol East County Police Chief Inspector Col Mayen Luk told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that the accident happened at the border between Jonglei and Lakes State, but on the latter’s side.
The deceased were identified as Makat Kuernyang from Awerial and Malaat Jok Mabor from Yirol East County.
Luk identified the injured as Ngor Chok Marial, Maker Majier Mut and Bakic Maker Mabor from Yirol East, adding that they were in hospital in Bor County.
He appealed to the Bor County authorities to let the case be handled by the Lakes State.
Yirol East County Commissioner Manyang Lueth said he could not give the details of the accident as it happened when he was away from his office.
A Lakes State civil society activist, Angelina Adhel, sent her message of condolence to the bereaved families.
She urged both the governments of Lakes and Jongeli states to work together to assist the injured get appropriate medical care.
Adhel also called on the transportation authorities to establish controls similar to the aviation authority’s to minimize boats accidents.
