At least two civilians were killed and another injured on Wednesday during an attack by gunmen on a commercial vehicle along the Juba-Bor road, local officials said.

Deng Kur, secretary general of the Jonglei drivers’ union, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that a vehicle traveling from the town of Bor in Jonglei State to the capital Juba was attacked in an area between Bangachorot and Sudan Safari areas.

“The incident occurred at around 9 am when the vehicle was ambushed by gunmen. Two people including the driver were killed while another passenger was critically injured,” he said.

“Those attackers looted personal belongings in the car that was carrying 17 passengers,” he added.

Deng pointed out that the wounded person had been taken to Bor Hospital for treatment. He urged the governments of Terekeka and Jonglei States to beef up security along the road.

Chol Deng Achiek, the deputy police commissioner in Jonglei State, confirmed the incident. He said investigations are underway to identify the attackers and their motives.

“The attackers were in green military uniforms but we are yet to find out whether they are members of the holdout opposition groups or not,” he said.

The top police officer disclosed that they decided to suspend the public transport between Juba and Bor due to insecurity. “Meanwhile we suspended travels for a while,” he said.
