The police in Rumbek town of South Sudan’s Lakes State say a road ambush on the outskirts of Rumbek town on Monday evening left two people dead including a sub-chief.
Elijah Mabor Makuac, Lakes State police spokesperson told Radio Tamazuj that the incident occurred in Liet-heer, some 3 kilometers away from Rumbek town.
He said the victims were traveling from Rumbek East to Rumbek Central County before they were attacked by a group of armed men.
"When they were traveling, they fell in an ambushed of unidentified armed men. Two people were killed and one person ran for his life in a place called Liet-heer,” he said.
The police official said the attackers managed to escape but investigations have been launched to establish the motive behind the attack and apprehend the attackers.
“It will only be possible for the police to apprehend the perpetrators if there is a cooperation between them and the community," urged Mabor.
The Assistant Paramount chief of the Panyar section of Paloch Payam, Kuoi Maluac identified the two people killed in as Sub-Chief Marur Abiar and Kaman Rual. He said three other people survived the attack.
Maluac appealed to the state government to apprehend the culprits and anybody who has information regarding the suspects to come forward so that justice can be served.
