At least two South Sudanese nationals were killed when two communities clashed at Kiryandongo refugee settlement in northern Uganda on Monday.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, the head of the Upper Nile community at the camp, Anyanya Gatliah Bilieu confirmed the incident.

He said that the incident took place when a young man from the Laak Nuer community impregnated a girl hailing from the Gawaar Nuer community.

Members of the Gawaar community went and attacked the house of Johnson Khan Machak, head of the Laak community in retaliation for the pregnancy and he was killed on the spot, according to Gatliah.

He added that the deputy chairperson of Nuer local court at the camp, Taban Matai was also killed in the clashes.

Gatliah pointed out that the Ugandan police intervened to resolve the matter.

Ter Manyang Gatwech, a South Sudanese activist based in Uganda, urged both communities to desist from violence and amicably resolve their issues.

In January last year, at least two South Sudanese refugees were killed in inter-communal clashes in Uganda’s district of Arua.

More than 1 million South Sudan refugees have fled to neighboring Uganda since December 2013, according to the United Nations.
