At least two people have been killed and two others injured after a building they were demolishing collapsed on them at Konyo-Konyo market in the capital Juba on Tuesday.
“A South Sudanese and a Ugandan died. There are two others who sustained injuries and they have been taken to hospital,” Michael Ladu Allajabu, the Mayor of Juba City Council, told reporters on Tuesday.
According to the mayor, the incident occurred at around 10 am after the constructors discovered some faults in a store building. “The owner of the store is a Somali national, he was the one who decided to demolish the building and hired workers to do the work,” he explained.
Mayor Allajabu appealed to the businesspeople in Juba to carry out construction works in consultation with the Juba City Council. “As a Juba City Council, we will soon issue orders to review contracts signed with investors and traders because some stores, hotels and shops are now being built in residential areas,” he said.
The mayor revealed that the store’s owner has been arrested by police authorities for investigations.
