Two dead in separate attacks in Uror County

The commissioner of Uror County in Jonglei State said at least two people were killed and more than 2,000 head of cattle raided in separate attacks by armed youth in parts of the county on Monday.

The commissioner of Uror County in Jonglei State said at least two people were killed and more than 2,000 head of cattle raided in separate attacks by armed youth in parts of the county on Monday.

Commissioner Machot Gatluak Kenyjak told Radio Tamazuj that the incidents occurred in Wickol and Padiek areas.

“In the first incident on Mondy afternoon in Wickol, a herdsman was killed and 2,000 cows raided in an attack at a grazing site. While later the same day in Padiek, a group of three women coming from Yuai was waylaid, leaving one dead and the rest escaped unhurt,” he said.

The local official condemned the attack and said armed youth from Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) were involved.

Meanwhile, Gatluak Reath Wuol, the Uror youth leader called for government intervention.

“It is surprising that youth from GPAA is engaged in the attacks yet we are for peace. If these cattle raids, killings, and child abductions continue, the ongoing peace effort will be disrupted. So I am calling for the intervention of the government of Jonglei State and GPAA,” he said.

For his part, Nyany Korok, the GPAA’s anti-corruption commission deputy head, said they are not aware of the attacks and that they will investigate.

“We are not aware of these attacks but as a government, we will investigate. To be honest, as a government, we are for peace and should it be to be true that those attackers are from GPAA then I think they would be individuals loitering in the bushes,” he said.
