At least two children died due to poor healthcare at a camp for displaced people inside the Catholic Church in Raja town in the proposed Lol State last week.

Rev. Richard Batista, who heads the Catholic Church in Raja, told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that two children died due to lacks of doctors and medicines inside the camp.

He blamed the death of the two children on outbreaks of diarrhoea, malaria and other diseases, amid poor healthcare in the area, while warning that the situation could deteriorate further.

Batista pointed out that the number of the conflict-displaced people inside the Catholic Church rose to 25,000 people after the recent clashes between government forces and insurgents in Raja town last Friday.

The clergyman called on humanitarian organizations, the national government and the Catholic Church to intervene as soon as possible.

He disclosed that a team of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) visited the area to assess the situation of the needy people.
