At least two Sudanese refugee children died at Doro camp in South Sudan’s Northern Upper Nile State after floods destroyed several houses on Sunday, an official said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, the Northeast Maban County commissioner, Timan Al-Noor Mina, said the children, aged 6 and 7, were swept away by floodwaters.

“The two bodies have not been found so far because of the heavy water flow," he added.

Al Noor said the humanitarian situation in Doro camp and Bunj area was dire, stressing that the floods caused by the Yabus stream destroyed a number of houses and facilities, including the county headquarters.

The Yabus is a valley lined with dense forests in Sudan's Blue Nile state that fills with water during the rainy season.

The county commissioner further said many displaced people are sheltering in schools.
