Police in South Sudan’s Torit State have arrested a man and woman found with the illegal drug bangi (marijuana).
The two were arrested at Ifwanyak residential area in Torit town.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, the state police spokesperson, Lt Colonel Mathew Ochan said the two transported four sacks, each containing 100kgs of the illegal drug bangi from Ketire area of Geria County, into Torit town.
He said the suspects are at Torit Police central division awaiting trial.
“We arrested in Ifwanyak, a man and a woman with four sacks, 100kgs each, of the illegal drug bangi. These people are currently in police custody awaiting investigations and will be forwarded to court,” said Ochan.
“This is what happened, but generally, the Easter celebration went well. God has helped the people for all these days,” he added.
According to the Penal Code of South Sudan, possession of illegal drugs reportedly attracts a penalty of between 7-14 years in jail.
“It is a crime according to the law. The constitution of South Sudan says someone who possesses bangi commits a crime. It is a bad drug which destroys people. The Penal Code says anyone who possesses bangi will have 7 or 14 years in prison,” said Ochan.
He added, “The investigation is going on and the judge will find the final judgment there”.
Ochan warned the public against possessing illegal drugs.
