Two abductees allegedly abducted by armed local youth in Nyirol County, Jonglei State have been recovered, authorities have confirmed.

The two Murle women aged 18 and 30 were abducted during the invasion of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) by armed Jonglei youth.

Nyirol County Commissioner James Bol Makuey told Radio Tamazuj Friday that the abductees were peacefully handed over by their captors.

He said plans are underway to hand them over to Pibor authorities for reunion with their families.

“These women were abducted by our youth when they went to GPAA in 2022. As Jonglei authorities were are committed to peace with GPAA and that is why we recovered these women. They are now in my compound and arrangements are underway so that they are handed over to Pibor authorities,” Makuey said.

He said “the criminals from Pibor” were still attacking his area, the latest being the killing of a man in Thol Payam on  January 10th.

Makuey appealed to his neighbors to in the greater Pibor to commit to peace.

Abraham Kelang, the GPAA Information Minister, lauded Nyirol authorities for the recovery and reiterated their commitment to peace with Jonglei State.

He blamed repeated attacks on Jonglei State by armed criminals, adding that security forces on both sides would apprehend them through joint operations.
