The Twic Mayardit Community of South Sudan’s Twic State has referred the debate over the location of the state capital to the state legislative assembly, after a reconciliation conference last week.

Twic State Information Minister Michael Mayot told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that the conference was initiated following a misunderstanding sparked by the establishment of the Twic State capital at Mayen Abun.

Upon its creation, Twic State capital was Turalei. However, Mayen Abun, the then capital of Twic County was decreed as the seat of the state government causing major debate among the people of Twic State.

Mayot said slightly more than 50% of the members present at the conference voted to maintain the capital in its current location, slightly more than 40% voted against the relocation while about 3% chose to abstain.

The minister added that the vote and recommendations will be submitted to the state legislative assembly, and finally to the Council of States for further consultations and deliberations and ultimate decision.
