Six Twic Mayardit clans began a reconciliation conference today morning in Aweng County of South Sudan’s Twic State.
The event brought together leaders of the Twic Mayardit community, and was also well attended by state government officials and governors of neighboring states.
The initiative came after a misunderstanding sparked by the establishment of the Twic State capital at Mayen Abun.
In 2015, several citizens in Turalei area objected to the establishment of the state capital at Mayen Abun by President Salva Kiir. They feel the state capital should be located in Turalei.
Information Minister in Twic State Michael Mayot Nuan told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that the conference will continue for two days. He said that participants appeared willing to reach peaceful solutions and turn the page on their challenges.
“The conference aims at addressing the challenges facing the community and the state. It will also discuss many issues concerning peaceful coexistence,” he said.
“This is the second conference since the creation of the state. The conference is expected to come up with a resolution on the location of the state capital,” he added.
The governors of Aweil East, Northern Liech, Gogrial, Tonj and Abyei Administrative Area also attended the conference.
