Twic East County food stores run empty

Twic East County Commissioner says food stores at the county headquarters, which he says were for internally displaced persons, have run empty.

Commissioner Dau Akoi Jurkuch said the hungry people in his county are likely to leave if the World Food Programme fails to deliver more food supplies within days.

He expressed concern that the displaced people from his own county as well as those who have come from neighboring Duk County to the north would face starvation if the situation is not addressed.

“We were interrupted by the war and this could not allow us from the two counties to cultivate,” he said. “Over the last few years we use to get some harvests so that we don’t depend much on the UN supply.”

The commissioner stated that the numbers of IDPs from the two counties is over 36,400 in need of food urgently. He asked the UN agencies to speed up food deliveries to the two counties of Twic East and Duk.
